Pulsed Power Accelerator Design with COMSOL Multiphysics® Software - new

D. Reisman[1]
[1]Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM, USA

We have developed Thor: a pulsed power accelerator for performing dynamic material experiments. The design was aided by using the COMSOL Multiphysics® software with the AC/DC Module and RF Module. Our design process involved optimizing the impedance of the system while maintaining a good margin against electrical breakdown. By using a three-dimensional electromagnetic model of the entire power ...

[2] A&E Partnership, Belchertown, MA, USA

The antenna pattern synthesis problem is of the utmost importance in almost every kind of antenna applications. Therefore, a very large number of contributions have appeared on this subject. A number of different implementation methods are well known, and widely used. In this paper we present a new method that takes advantage of the antenna geometry to generate an aperture phase distribution ...

A Reliable Approach to Estimate Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering Intensity of Metal Nanostructures

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a fingerprint spectroscopy whose sensitivity is down to single molecule level. The mechanism of SERS is mainly contributed to huge enhancement of local electric field, which originated from surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures. It is very important to exactly calculate the local enhancement in the electric field strength for right ...

Plasmonic Properties of Bimetal Nanoshell Cylinders and Spheres

K. Ehrhold[1], S. Christiansen[1,2], and U. Gösele[1]
[1]Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany,
[2]Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena, Germany

Plasmonics is a new branch of the fascinating field of photonics and develops concepts to quench light beyond the diffraction limit and enhance electromagnetic fields. These enhancements occur in metals as localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSP) a coupling of the surface density oscillations of the electron gas to the incident light. With threedimensional nano-structures of coinage metals ...

The Radiofrequency Heating (RFH) is widely employed to heat biological tissue in different surgical procedures. Most models analyze the RFH employing a Parabolic Heat Transfer Equation (PHTE) based on Fourier's theory. The PHTE can be used for problems involving long heating times or low thermal gradients. However, when the problem involves short heating times or extreme thermal gradients it is ...

A Study on the Suitability of Indium Nitride for THz Plasmonics

A. Shetty[1], K. J. Vinoy[1], S. B. Krupanidhi[2]
[1]Electrical Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India
[2]Materials Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India

As interest in the electromagnetic spectrum expands towards the infrared and terahertz range, the distinct advantages of using semiconductors instead of metals for plasmonic applications must be understood. Plasmonic resonances in gold (Au) and indium nitride (InN) gratings are studied, in the terahertz (?=30µm) regime. The electromagnetic properties of Au and InN are described by the Drude ...

Weak Formulations for Calculating Spin Wave Dispersion Relation in Magnonic Crystals

M. Mruczkiewicz[1]
[1]Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland

We study the spin wave excitation (coherent precession of magnetic moments) in periodically arranged magnetic stripes, i.e., in one-dimensional magnonic crystal (MC). Two approaches have been implemented. We have defined a structure that dispersion relation can be obtained using both approaches and compared them. In general, the approach I has to be used for MCs where the exchange interactions ...

Radio Frequency Tissue Ablation Simulation with COMSOL Multiphysics® Software

N. Elabbasi [1], M. Hancock [1],
[1] Veryst Engineering, Needham, MA, USA

Radiofrequency (RF) tissue ablation is commonly used to treat medical conditions involving dysfunctional tissue especially in the heart, kidneys, lungs, bones, or liver. An electrode at the tip of a catheter delivers high frequency current (350-500 kHz) to the targeted tissue causing it to heat and then ablate without disturbing the electrical signals of the nervous system or heart, and with ...
