Electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids in a slit channel(1D) is analyzed. The governing equations are the Poisson–Boltzmann equation, the Cauchy momentum equation, Generalized Smoluchowski equation and the continuity equation are used to get shear stress, dynamic viscosity, and velocity distribution. Simulations are performed to examine the effects of ?H, flow behavior index, double layer ...

This paper presents a unique design of MEMS based 4-bit shift register that perform shifting operation same as logic devices that are composed of solid-state transistors. The MEMS shift register design inherits all the advantages from MEMS switches and thus is expected to have more applications. One unique feature of this device is that it can perform all types of shifting mechanisms, but with ...

New giant piezoelectric factor materials such as PMN-PT and PZN-PT were researched during the last decade and are actually becoming commercially available. As they seem very attractive for actuator designs, we studied their potential in replacing PZT ceramics. In a first comparative approach, we tested a series of classic rectangular composite bimorph structures of different combinations of ...
Powerful automation and optimization methods for Material- and Process analysis with COMSOL Multiphysics and Matlab
SGL Group, Technology & Innovation, Meitingen, Germany
Thomas Frommelt received his PhD in physics in 2007 from the University of Augsburg for experimental work and simulation analysis on acoustically driven microfluidic mixing. In 2008, he joined the SGL Group and introduced COMSOL Multiphysics as the tool for flexible equation based modelling. Since then, he has focused on carbon material and process simulation employing methods of optimization and ...

A single-crystal diamond NEMS switch was fabricated while batch production of SCD MEMS/NEMS structures were developed. The diamond NEMS switches exhibit high performance with respect to high controllability, high reproducibility, and good reliability. Modeling and simulations were made that were consistent with experiments.

Introduction: Accurate fluid temperature control in microfluidic channels is a requirement for many lab-on-chip and micro-reactors.Thin films resistive metal heaters have proven to be the best choice for localizing heating applications with integrated microfluidic systems. A thin platinum layer has been chosen as the metal used to realize the meander because of its positive and linear temperature ...

The paper presents recent results concerning the experimental mechanical characterization, the numerical modeling and the design of micro-needles used in the construction of probe heads for wafer testing. A fully coupled electro-thermal model was created using COMSOL and combined to a research-oriented thermo-mechanical Finite Element (FE) code in order to accurately reproduce the micro-needle ...

Sleep apnea is a type of sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or instances of shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. There is a need to diagnose sleep apnea since it leads to fluctuations in the oxygen level that in turn affect the heart rate and blood pressure. In order to detect this disorder, a Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) based piezoelectric pressure sensor was ...

The greatest challenge being faced for realization of Micro-Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology is the lack of a simple, quick and reliable method for the fabrication of 3-D microchannel in the range of micrometers. A novel fabrication technique which opens possibilities for the production of these microfluidic channels is presented in this paper. The present paper highlights the ...

A fundamental understanding of the transport phenomena in microfluidic channels is critical for systematic design and precise control of such miniaturized devices towards the integration and automation of Lab-on- a-chip devices. Electroosmotic flow is widely used to transport and mix fluids in microfluidic systems. Electroosmotic transport in convergent divergent micronozzle is significant in ...
