Electromagnetic Plunger with Stopper

Application ID: 36631

This is a transient model of an electromagnetic plunger with stopper restricting the linear motion. The model consists of a magnetic core, nonmagnetic guider, multi-turn coil, nonmagnetic stopper/blocker, and magnetic plunger attached to the spring and damper at the base.

The electromagnetic force on the plunger due to the transient current in the coil is calculated using the Maxwell stress tensor method in the Magnetic Fields physics. The electromagnetic force is then coupled to the Solid Mechanics physics using the Magnetomechanics Multiphysics coupling. The Solid Mechanics physics defines the spring and damping foundation of the plunger as well as the physical contact between the plunger and stopper. Due to the translational motion of the plunger, the Magnetic Fields physics is solved together with the Moving Mesh physics to correctly compute the fields.

Previous versions of this model are explained in much greater detail in the following blog post: Part 2: Model a Linear Electromagnetic Plunger with a Blocker.

This model example illustrates applications of this type that would nominally be built using the following products:
