The COMSOL Conference 2016 Bangalore took place on October 20-21, and presenters from across the country came to showcase their simulation work. From modeling the motion of a dragonfly’s flapping wings to the simulation design of piezoelectric energy harvesters, we saw a wide range of exciting poster and presentation topics at this year’s event. Top Papers and Posters at the COMSOL Conference 2016 Bangalore
During the awards ceremony on the second day of the COMSOL Conference 2016 Bangalore, we handed out the Best Paper, Best Poster, and Popular Choice Poster awards. Every year, the judges have a tough time choosing the winning presentations from so much fantastic work — and this year was no exception. Swapnil Badgujar, program chair of this year’s conference, said: “I was happy to see so many exciting COMSOL [Multiphysics] simulations in various application areas. There was good interest and curiosity among attendees about simulation apps using [the] Application Builder, and it was nice to meet so many experts at the conference.”

Let’s explore this year’s winning papers and posters.
The Best Paper award went to Subhashish Dasgupta, Kandasamy Ravikumar, et al. from ABB for their paper titled “Measurement Of Blood Flowrate In Large Blood Vessels Using Magnetic Flowmeter”. The paper investigates how the movement of blood vessels affects the accuracy of magnetic flow meters to measure blood flow rate. Magnetic flow meters operate on electromotive force (EMF), so it is important to study this principle when designing these devices.
The research team built a finite element model of a magnetic flow meter using the COMSOL Multiphysics® software by integrating laminar fluid flow (blood flow), electric and magnetic fields, and structural dynamics (FSI). Simulation enabled them to compare the EMF when blood vessels are deformed versus when they are in their initial state. This helped them to evaluate and optimize the performance of the magnetic flow meter for noninvasive medical testing applications.
This year, the Best Poster award went to A.F. Biju and A. Pandey from Honeywell for their poster “Multiphysics Analysis Of Inductive Brazing Process”. For their simulation work, Biju and Pandey analyzed inductive brazing and investigated the temperature rise and distribution during different parts of the process.
The induction brazing process involves three different types of physics, including electromagnetic excitation, eddy heating, and heat transfer in solids. The team used COMSOL Multiphysics to couple AC inductive heating to heat transfer in solids in order to model the different parameters involved in induction brazing. This helped them identify the optimal parameters for improved quality and characteristics of the process.
Popular Choice Poster
The third award at the COMSOL Conference 2016 Bangalore was for the Popular Choice Poster. For this award, attendees got to play the role of the judge by voting for their favorite posters. Although it was a close vote, Subramanian Thennavarajan et al. from National Aerospace Laboratories were given the award for their poster “FSI And Modal Analysis Of Elastic Ring Squeeze Film Damper For Small Gas Turbine Engines“.

The winning poster highlights the design of an elastic ring squeeze film damper (ERSFD), which is a component of high-speed gas turbines. These turbines are powerful and lightweight power sources for modern aircraft and work above critical speeds; hence they have strict requirements for controlling and isolating vibrations. The researchers used COMSOL Multiphysics and the add-on Structural Mechanics and CFD modules to find the ERSFD mode shapes and profile pressure distribution when subjected to vibration. With this research, the team was able to optimize a high-power gas turbine system that can operate at super critical speeds.
