Design and Simulation of a Nano-Wire Based Piezoresistive Pressure Sensor

S. A. Selvin, N. B. Moorthy, G. Anju, and M. Alagappan
PSG College of Technology
Coimbatore
Tamil Nadu, India

This paper chalks out the design and performance of a piezo resistive surface micro machined circular diaphragm based pressure sensor. A structural deformation in the piezo resistive nano structure placed above the diaphragm will result in varied current density, which is in direct accordance with the applied pressure. This effect relies on the principle of piezo resistivity and employing a nano ...

[1]Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, USA

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proven experimentally to be well suited for field emission applications. An optimized triode configured CNT field emission array is developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics Electrostatics Application to adjust five key physical dimensions to investigate the effects on the enhanced electric field at the CNT emitter tips. The five dimensions studied are CNT spacing, ...

Nondestructive Testing of Composites Using Model Based Design

E. Nesvijski[1]
[1]ACOUSTICS@MBD CONSULTANTS, LLC, Westborough, MA, USA

There is a practical interest among composite materials manufacturers to high-speed accurate non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technology for voids inspection when these voids are natural components of such complex structures like resin insulated layer of double-sided copper-clad laminates. Model based design (MBD) of NDE system is one of principal solutions for voids inspection in such composites ...

Polymer Nanowire based Impedance Biosensor

N. Das[1], C. R. Chaudhuri[1]
[1]Department of Electronics and Telecommunication, BESUS, Howrah, West Bengal, India

In this paper, we have proposed an impedance biosensor based on polymer nanowire (made of polyaniline) for efficient electric field mediated capture of biomolecules. Existing polymer nanowire based biosensors fail to achieve high sensitivity for low surface to volume ratio as the whole length of the nanowire is exposed to the analyte .Also biosensors are dependent on diffusion mediated capture of ...

Air bearings are special type of bearings which provide nearly zero friction between two surfaces. This is achieved by a compressed layer of gas between the surfaces. This study presents a modeling technique for an Air bearing component. COMSOL Multiphysics® is used to efficiently solve a coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis. Computational time is significantly reduced compared to ...

Design of a RF MEMS Switch

B. Mishra, M. P. S. Naidu, J. Raj, and Z. C. Alex
VIT University
Vellore
Tamilnadu, India

This paper presents a novel design of a RF MEMS Switch. The switch is a capacitive type, which is actuated by an electrostatic force. The structure of the switch consists of a CPW (coplanar waveguides) transmission lines and a suspended membrane. The modelling of switch is done using COMSOL software and RF characteristics is found out by using CST software.

Carbon MEMS Accelerometer

J. Strong, and C. Washburn
Sandia National Laboratories
Albuquerque, NM

The newly emerging field of carbon-based MEMS (C-MEMS) attempts to utilize the diverse properties of carbon to push the performance of MEMS devices beyond what is currently achievable. Our design employs a carbon-carbon composite using nano-materials to build a new class of MEMS accelerometer that is hyper-sensitive over a dynamic range from micro-G to hundreds of G’s – far surpassing the ...

This paper reports the design of a piezoelectric energy harvesting micro generator for an energy autonomous tire pressure monitoring wireless sensor node. For our design we use a piezoelectric MEMS generator approach without additional mass. The intrinsic mass of the cantilever is in the microgram region and the resulting acceleration forces are very small. The generator has a triangular ...

MEMS Structure for Energy Harvesting

S. Rabbani, P.K. Rathore, G. Ghosh, and B.S. Panwar
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi, India

In this paper, a piezoelectric cantilever is investigated using finite element analysis made possible by COMSOL Multiphysics for the generation of electrical energy. A micro power generator was designed to convert mechanical vibrations present in the environment to electrical power. The model was studied for different cantilever dimensions. The load resistor was optimized for obtaining maximum ...
